Kansas Senate Prayer

When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities but what he said next caused a number of legislators to walk out and for his church to receive 5,000 calls in the next 6 weeks of whom only 47 were negative.

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, A Woe to those who call evil good@ but that is exactly what we have done.

We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We confess that.

We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism.

We have worshiped other gods and called it multi-culturalism.

We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative life-style.

We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.

We have killed our unborn and called it choice.

We have not disciplined our children and called it building self-esteem.

We have abused power and called it politics.

We have coveted our neighbor= s possession and called it ambition.

We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of speech.

We have ridiculed the values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

We have allowed non-Christians to dominate our mass media and called it constitutional free speech.

We have allowed money to control our government and called it freedom of speech.

Guide and bless these men and women to see Thy Will. We ask this in the name of Your Son, the Living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Gnosticism and the Creation of the Canon

There are 27 books in our canon of the New Testament. We are all familiar with the letters of Paul, John, Peter, James, Jude and Hebrews, with the acts of the Apostles, the Book of Revelation, and the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Since the end of the fourth century, the Church has accepted these books as authentically presenting the message of Jesus but today a small number of scholars are examining other texts that were rejected by the Church and referring to those texts to re-create something of the early Church.

One of these texts is the gospel of Thomas, which consists of sayings attributed to Jesus. This book along with 54 others was unknown to us until 1947 when a whole library was dug up at Nag Hammadi, Egypt.

Other title that surfaced were the infancy narrative of James, the gospel of Peter, the gospel of Philip, the gospel of Mary, the Acts of Paul and Tecla and a host of others.

These books promote a theology opposed to the theology of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. They were written by groups of people in the early centuries of the church and they appear to have been buried by the writers when the church authorities agreed on a canon.

They were all written in Coptic, which was the common language of Egypt during these centuries although it is evident that some of the texts had been originally written in Greek and translated.

Although they used the names of leading figures in the church (Peter, Paul etc.) they were certainly not written by any of them. It was common practice to put a famous name to a work to give it more authenticity. Many believe these writers were Gnostics who were heretics.

Who Were They?

The Gnostics--the word comes from the Greek gnosis, to know---believed that they possessed a special knowledge that put them a notch above the ordinary person in the pew. This knowledge destined them for eternal life.

They considered matter and creation to be bad. Their values were spiritual only. Since for them matter was bad, the god who created matter was bad, also. He is referred to as the demiurge. In the beginning, something went wrong with the plan and God had gotten divided up in his battle with evil. This resulted in two gods, one evil and the other good and spiritual. The evil one created matter and creation was not good. Matter was bad. But sparks of the divine (the good god) went flying about. The Gnostics believed that their souls were sparks of the divine, imprisoned in the flesh and seeking release.

What They Did With the Scriptures?

When their philosophy was applied to the Old Testament everything got topsy turvy. In the creation story in Genesis, they opined that Adam and Eve had tried to recapture knowledge, since that was what they felt they had to have. The serpent who told Eve to eat the fruit was the redeemer. He was telling her that she needed knowledge. In one of their books, the Testimony of Truth, the serpent is Wisdom. Likewise Cain is good because he wanted to destroy matter.

When they explained Christianity, they explained that the purpose of Jesus coming to earth was to collect all those bits of the divine that had gone astray at creation and get them back together again.

They said Jesus had conveyed a secret knowledge to some of his apostles, especially to Thomas whom they considered his twin. But the big problem was that when applied the doctrine of matter being bad to Jesus, they came up with the idea that Jesus did not have a real body, that he only appeared to have one.

Dokeo is the Greek word for appear so they came up with a docetic Christ. This subverted the emerging orthodox doctrines of the incarnation (matter was bad, therefore was not human), crucifixion (he didn= t suffer and neither need they) and resurrection (they did not believe in a physical resurrection).

Gnostic Effect on Christian Thinking.

Their behavior was also a cause for concern. Most were ascetics since they distrusted matter and sexual contact was bad since it produced more matter. Several of their tracts (The Acts of Paul and Thecla and the Acts of Peter) present celibacy as the supreme virtue. Techla is willing to die rather than marry. Peter brings his daughter to good health and then realizes that she might marry so he returns her to deformity again. This spreads the word that marriage is bad and wrong.

But others thought that since matter did not matter they could indulge themselves in whatever they liked without hurting the soul. And what they seemed to like was sexual promiscuity. It is evident that such people had infiltrated the Christians to whom Peter wrote his second letter and those whom Jude addressed.

Gnosticism left things open to abuse. Marriage was bad, but at the same time, one could engage in physical things without hurting the soul, so sexual license was prevalent.

Women and Gnosticism.

At least one scholar, Elaine Pagels, suggest that many women were attracted to this heretical group because in it they were given authority denied them in the orthodox church.

Women figure more prominently in several of the writings: the gospels of Thomas, Philip, James, Apocryphon of Peter, Acts of Paul and Thecla, Thunder perfect Mind. In the Gospel of Mary Magdalene , Mary is the leading figure and orders Peter around. In the Gospel of Truth, God is a woman.

They were mainly written in the second century when the hierarchy was being formed. Clement of Rome insisted that there is but one bishop as there is but one God and that men form the legitimate body of the community.

These writings may have encouraged insubordination by women and may have been written as a reaction to male authority. They may have been the origin of celibacy for women in the Church.

We know that a local synod of bishops was held at Gangra in the fourth century. It was chiefly concerned to condemn an Armenian bishop Eusathius and his followers, for what they held about celibacy and the conduct of women.

The source of the problem seems to have been that married women were leaving their husbands, shaving their heads and dressing like men out of an exalted idea of virginity and denigration of marriage.

The Synod of Gangra declared:

A If any one disparages marriage, shuns a faithful and dod-fearing wife who sleeps with her husband, and speaks as though she cannot enter the kingdom of heaven, let him be anathema.

A If any woman deserts her husband and wishes to be quit of him because she abhors marriage, let her be anathema.@

In his Easter letter of 367, Bishop Athanasius of Alexandria mentions the 27 books of the New Testament that we now have. The Council of Hippo in 393 also mentions these 27 books as being authoritative.

Satan Will Find His Way Into the Highest positions in the Church

The secret of Fatima released by the Vatican during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 revealed that Satan would reach the highest positions in the Church. He did so and created chaos in the Church which is continuing.

Our Lady at Fatima in 1917 warned that Satan would enter the Church and find his way into the highest positions in the Church. We list here some of the success Satan has had in ruining the Catholic Church and making the salvation of souls more difficult.

1. An entirely new vapid Mass in the vernacular and facing the people rather than God in the tabernacle.

2. The sacraments in the vernacular with a different form than before.

3. Lay people being allowed to touch the Sacred Host and sacred vessels.

4. The dimunition of the Eucharistic fast.

5. Receiving Holy Communion under both species as Protestants do.

6. Receiving Holy Communion standing instead of kneeling.

7. Removal of the communion rail.

8. Proliferation of a mob of lay people in the sanctuary and ministers of Holy Communion.

9. Allowing girls and women to be altar servers.

10. The practical elimination of Friday abstinence and the Lenten fast.

11. Wholesale abandonment of the priesthood and sisterhood.

12. Discarding of religious garb by priests and sisters.

13. Demise of lay societies: Holy Name, Catholic Youth Organization, Legion of Mary.

14. Loss of effectiveness of the Legion of Decency.

15. Neglect of the Rosary and devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

16. Dimunition of Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and Corpus Christi Processions.

17. Lack of insistence on children attending Catholic schools.

18. Unsatisfactory catechisms and poor seminary theological/moral training of future priests.

19. Allowing Catholic weddings in Protestant churches.

20. Wholesale annulments of marriages smacks of divorce Catholic style.

21. Lack of respect for Bishops; many allow priests to confirm; we no longer kiss their rings; NCCB makes them seem more like politicians than shepherds.

22. Dropping ember days, rogation days and vigils of great feast days.

23. Changing the Sabbath from Sunday to Saturday.

24. Complete revision of the Church calendar that had been stable for centuries for no apparent reason.

25. Sermons do not instruct Catholics in their faith so that most do not know much about Catholicism.

26. American bishops disobey Roman instructions that forbid extra-ordinary ministers of the Eucharist when a priest is present.

If these changes are allowed by the Church, why not other changes? Satan is laughing with delight at his success in upsetting Church traditions that had been in effect for centuries. If your neighbor can have his marriage annulled why do not I leave my husband and get it annulled so I can be free and find a richer husband. I am tired of being poor. If anyone can touch the Sacred Host what is so special about the priesthood? If nobody goes to confession anymore yet all go to communion, is anything a sin?

NEW YORK- The books entitled Roses From Heaven produced by Ella McBride of Orange, Texas contained all the Bayside messages from 1968 to 1990 and were stored in a Connecticut warehouse by a supposed devotee of Bayside. Sometime in the last few years the warehouse owner got angry and demanded rental payments. Since the Shrine of Our Lady of the Roses did not have any funds after paying their lawyers several hundred thousand dollars for the eviction of Michael Mangan and his followers and did not alert anyone as to the need, the warehouse owner destroyed the 10,500 volumes that had cost $55,000.00 to print. That is why the Roses books are no longer available.

The only Bayside message books now available from Children of Mary; PO Box 350333; Ft Lauderdale, FL 33335-0333 USA are the Virgin Mary= s Bayside Prophecies covering 1980 to 1994 for $6.00 and The Incredible Bayside Prophecies on the United States and Canada!! Which sells for $6.00. Shipping is $3.00. This book is 360 pages and has selections of Bayside Messages on various topics. The 1980-1994 book is 532 pages and has the complete messages for those years. The producer of these books is Gary Wohlscheid of These Last Days Ministries who would need a lot of persons and money to complete the project. Above two books are available from us: Children of Mary; PO Box 350333; Ft Lauderdale, FL 33335-0333. USA

The Our Lady of The Roses Blue Book went out of print and there are no funds available to reprint. Mary Rademacher produced that book and guesses it would take at least $20,000.00 to get a favorable printing rate per copy. The Messages from 1970 to 1979 are no longer available in book form. They are available on the Internet at roses.org and some tabloids are available at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Roses covering 1973 thru 1976. They have the pink book of messages, hardbound from 1977-86 for $15 and 1987-94 for $5. VATICAN CITY---Pope John Paul II has appointed 4 Cardinals to a the Ecclesia Dei Commission and charged them with the mission to restore the followers of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre to the Catholic Church. The Commission will include Cardinal Josef Ratzinger.

The Ecclesia Dei head Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos has been negotiating with the four Society of St. Pius X bishops since June 2000. The main points at issue are that Rome puts in writing that the old Latin Mass is not banned, a point Rome accepts but fears to put in writing at this time. Cardinal Hoyos said the lifting of the excommunication of the Society would be part of a package deal reintegrating the Society into the mainstream Church.

Russian parliament OKs lyrics for anthem.

By Judith Ingram-AP-MOSCOW--A decade after Boris Yeltsin threw out the Soviet anthem, legislators ushered it back in March 7 with lyrics cleansed of communist-era associations and a dose of religion: a homeland A protected by God.@ Forty eight years and 2 days after the death of Josef Stalin.

The lopsided vote in the lower house of parliament--345 in favor of the new lyrics and 19 against with one abstention--was one of the final steps necessary to bring back the Soviet-era anthem, this time as Russia= s national anthem. Legislators restored the old melody in December.

The lyrics were expected to win quick approval by the upper house and by President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin led the campaign first to bring back the Soviet-era melody and to add lyrics written by Sergei Mikhalkov, the poet who co-wrote previous versions paying homage to communist leaders.

The new words glorifying Russia= s might reflect the patriotic mood that Putin has sought to strengthen, and the reference to God underlined that the Soviet-era atheist ideology has been replaced by a new official reverence for religion:

A From the southern seas to the Arctic Circle,

Stretch our forests and fields,

You= re unique in the world, you= re uniqueC

Native land protected by God!@

The anthem= s refrain is reminiscent of its predecessor, saluting the A free fatherland@ and its A age-old union of fraternal peoples.@

The move to restore the lyrics was welcomed by many Russians who felt that the nation had been too hasty in trying to cut ties with the Soviet past. Others fiercely protested, arguing the melody would forever carry associations with Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin and dictator Josef Stalin who murdered 27 million Soviet and European people during 30 years of terror from 1924-1953.

Traditional Movement in Poland

January 30, 2001-

Before Return of Tradition

In December 1992 Ruch Narodowy (National Movement) had published an article entitled A Return of Tradition@ by Mariusz Urban. The article presented a suggestion of parallel activities: the introduction of the the Society of St. Pius X and the propagating of the Tridentine Mass within the Catholic Church in Poland.

In the autumn of 1994 the Society of St. Pius X established its activities in Poland. This was preceded by investigative visits. In its relations with the Society, Ruch Narodowy was not acting as a political party, but as Catholics, members of the Ruch Narodowy. Cooperation with the Society was initiated in October 1994 with a break from December 1994 to March 1995 and was ended in October 1996. Since July 1997 members and supporters of Ruch Narodowy have ceased to participate in any forms of the Societies activities.

Society of St. Pius X presents itself in such a way as if the true Church was reduced just to this Society. The Society does not have an understanding of the multi-century ethos of the Catholic Church in Poland, the ideals and martyrology of the Polish nation. From the very beginning of its activities in Poland it has demonstrated unreliability and dishonesty. Destruction of family ties and friendships are a result of its activities. The Society is mainly received as a medial phenomenon, supported by substantial financial means in advertising campaigns, often incompatible with its apostolate. The Society= s superiors were many times, discreetly informed of various problems regarding its Polish activities. However, they chose to ignore the problems. These criticisms discredit SSPX as a religious institution and generally as an institution conducting activities in Poland.

Recognizing the need of the return to Tradition, by default we turn our attention to other centers of traditional liturgy and teaching. The Society of St. Peter is unfortunately not free of problems confirmed by certain situations in Poland in the previous year. We, therefore, conclude to return to the second activity proposed in the article A Return of Tradition@ . Mailing address: skr. 2, 80-528 Gdansk 28, Poland. Main office: Prezes Ruchu Narodowego; Mariusz Urban; ul. Parkowa 22/2A; 81-726 Sopot, Poland.

Blair is Leading Religious Figure

LONDON, Mar. 5, 01 CWNews.com- A new survey has named Prime Minister Tony Blair as Britain= s most powerful religious figure.

Blair, who regularly attends Mass with his Catholic wife and family, or alone at Westminster Cathedral (Catholic) when Parliament is in session is actually named for his devotion to the Church of England which he does not frequent and is seen as more important than the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Queen.

Cherie Blair, his wife, is fourth in A the God list@ which was chosen by a panel of eight religious experts and will be shown on TV next week. Their children are all baptized Catholics. In a joint statement the panel said: A This is the first time since Gladstone that we have had a Prime Minister who is so open about his religious convictions.@

US Ranks Third In Catholic Population

Huntington, Indiana, Feb. 9, 01--The United States ranks third in the world in Catholic population, behind Brazil and Mexico.

Brazil had 139 million Catholics, Mexico 118 million and the US 62.4 million officially but the true number is 84 million according to the Gallup poll. Bishops are lax about numbering their Catholic population fearing a backlash from the majority Jewish-Protestant culture. The remainder of the top 10 Catholic countries, in order, are the Philippines, Italy, France, Poland, Spain, Colombia, and Germany.

In the US, Rhode Island is the most Catholic state with 64.3 percent of the population being Catholic, with neighboring Massachusetts coming in at just under half of the population as Catholic. California, New York and Texas have the largest total Catholic populations, with the three states containing one-third of the US Catholic population. Using the bishop= s figures, Catholics are 22.7 percent of the US. Using the Gallup poll estimates Catholics are 29.85 percent of the population. Using baptismal statistics, Catholic baptisms each year are from 26% to 33% of the live births.

The April 1, 2000 US Census found 281,421,906 people an increase of 270% from 1900 which found 76,212,168 people. There are 38 million Hispanics in the census but they are not counted in Catholic population figures which are way off base and totally inaccurate. For example in Miami-Dade County in Florida there are 1.3 million Hispanics. The Archdiocese of Miami which includes Broward County with 250,000 Hispanics and Monroe County plus Miami-Dade says that there are 680,000 Catholics in the Archdiocese.

Has Russia Been Converted to the Catholic Church?

Fr. Fox is a South Dakota priest whom the EWTN Catholic Television Network blesses and parades before their cameras. Fr. Fox claims that the Pope has consecrated Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and that Sister Lucia of Fatima has signed a document attesting to that fact. The document has never been produced with her signature. Mary at Fatima requested that Russia be consecrated to Her Immaculate Heart as a means of converting Russia. The whole world would see that it was Mary that converted Russia. Since the Pope refuses to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, no conversion has taken place and in fact Russian Church officials are becoming very hostile to the Catholic Church as witnessed by the story below.

Russian Orthodox Patriarch Criticizes Catholic Presence

MOSCOW, Feb 15, 01 (CWN)--Russian Orthodox Patriarch Aleksei said that the Catholic Church should stop seeking converts in the former Soviet Union, repeating criticisms of the Church he= s made frequently in recent months, making the changes a precondition of a papal visit to Russia. Russian political leaders have demanded that Aleksei let the pope come to Russia.

A We have serious concerns about the fact that in post-Soviet times the Catholic Church has attempted to spread its faith in the territories of Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia and Kazakhstan,@ the patriarch told the Sevodnya daily newspaper. A At the same time in western Ukraine they have seized churches and deprived Orthodox believers of the chance to fulfill their religious needs,@ he said.

Ukrainian Catholics have insisted on the return of properties taken from them when the Church was suppressed by Josef Stalin in 1946 and given to the Orthodox forcing the Catholics underground and forced to worship in the woods outdoors and subject to arrest if caught much as it was in Ireland from Queen Elizabeth I on (1558-1829). Controversy, and even violence, results when the Orthodox refuse to return Catholic churches they have occupied for six decades. Pope John Paul plans to visit Ukraine in June, and has made clear his desire to visit Russia and has received the approval of President Putin.

A In course of discussions about a visit we decided to sign a joint declaration...and I would like an announcement of the rejection of proselytism and encroaching on our churches to be included in it,@ the patriarch said. A But the Pope does not agree that these two articles should come into the declaration. I hope that sooner or later we will overcome these discords,@ he added.

Catholic Appointed New Chief Secretary In Hong Kong

HONG KONG, Feb.15,01 (CWN)-- Hong Kong Financial Secretary Donald Tsang, a 56-year-old devout Catholic, has been appointed number two in the territory= s leadership.

He will be Chief Secretary alongside Governor Tung Cheehwa, who was appointed by Beijing in 1997. Tsang= s place as financial chief will be filled by banker Anthony Leung Kam-chung, former President of the JP Morgan Chase Bank. Asian-Pacific sector.

Donald Tsang succeeds Anson Chan, also a Catholic, who resigned in January, a few months before her term expired. Dubbed Hong Kong= s A Iron Lady@ and A conscience,@ Chan cited personal reasons for her departure. But many in the territory believe her strained relationship with Tung Cheewa and their disagreements over policies and approaches to governance on issues such as defending Hong Kong= s autonomy and freedoms are the cause. The announcement of Chan= s resignation was made only a day before the Hong Kong government launched accusations against members of the spiritualist group Falun Gong, calling it an > evil organization@ with > political aims@ threatening to outlaw it as a non-religious A rebellious@ sect.

During a meeting with 900 students the day before his appointment as chief secretary, Tsang said he prays for 20-25 minutes every morning attending Mass at St. Joseph= s Church. A Praying is very useful and perhaps even better than doing qigong (deep breathing exercises) or taiji (traditional Chinese calisthethetics), he told them.

Regarding his financial policies, the new chief secretary said: A When we create wealth, we should look beyond our own self interests to ensure no one is deprived of the opportunity to learn, to develop themselves, to meet their own basic needs. We should work together to create wealth for all, and not have to redistribute it,@ Tsang explained.

233 Spanish Civil War Martyrs Beatified

VATICAN, Mar. 11, 01 (CWN)-- Pope John Paul II presided at beatification ceremonies for 233 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War in St. Peter= s Square.

The beatification is the largest single recognition of martyrs from the conflict which divided Spain from 1936 and entailed a violent persecution of the Catholic Church. The 233 martyrs who died at different times and places have been recognized by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in 16 different investigations (or A Causes@ ), grouped according to the religious congregations to which they belonged or the particular circumstances in which they died. Their causes have been drawn together for the purposes of this ceremony.

The largest single group involved in one of these causes includes 74 martyrs, of whom 37 were laymen and 37 diocesan priests. All were members of Catholic Action in Valencia. The other martyrs are all priests or religious. Most are also from Valencia, although some come from other parts of Spain and some from other countries. Two martyrs, the sisters Dolores and Consulo Aguilar Malla are of Uruguayan origin, and will be the first natives of that country to be beatified. Overall over 7,000 priests and religious were murdered by the Spanish Communist government from 1936-39. New York Jews sent the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to fight for the Communist government but most were killed in their first battle of the war. Generalissimo Francisco Franco landed an army in Spain that he had assembled in the Azores area. The war ended with Franco= s siege of Madrid in 1939 when the communist government surrendered and Franco took over as El Caudillo, the Chief of Spain until his chosen successor, King Juan Carlos was installed a few decades ago along with democracy.

Children of Mary Need Your Help!

We almost ceased to exist in February and March as the last issue produced very little response and a few hate letters. We had received some book orders from the Internet which we used to pay the rent for February and March but now can not pay the approximately $1,200.00 in book bills. We also had used a new credit card to pay for all the printing and mailing of the last issue and maxed out the credit card at $943.00. Since we can not afford to stay any longer in this place at $425 rent per month, we are going to make a new attempt to move to a cheaper city. We could use some prayers that we can do it this time as we are on the ropes now.

We also have a third ten page book catalog which completes the conspiracy book list along with some small Catholic publishers. We did not mail to anyone due to financial problems. If you wish a copy, we need one first class stamp to mail to you.

Please send any help or book orders to: Children of Mary; PO Box 350333; Ft Lauderdale, FL 33335-0333 USA. Telephone or fax is 1-954-467-0272. Nobel Scientists Lobby Bush for Stem Cell Research

WASHINGTON, DC, Feb.23, 01 (CWN) C A group of 80 Nobel Prize winners called on President George W. Bush not to block federal funding of stem cell research that uses cells taken from aborted unborn children.

A It would be tragic to waste this opportunity to pursue the work that could potentially alleviate human suffering,@ the scientists wrote. Stem cells are the body= s master cells which are used to create all of the various organs and systems of the body. Scientists hope to understand how to use the cells to grow new organs and cells to help treat such malady= s as Parkinson= s disease, Alzheimer= s disease, and spinal cord injury. While stem cells are found in adults and can be harvested without killing the donor, scientists want access to embryonic stem cells because they are easier to manipulate.

While former President Clinton allowed federal agencies to define the procurement of the cells in such a way as to circumvent a federal law banning the funding of the harvesting of unborn children, Bush has signaled that he favors a ban on funding for the research but the Secretary of HEW, Thompson favors the research.

While federally funded scientists can= t use human embryos, privately funded scientists have harvested embryonic stem cells in laboratories, and the National Institutes of Health is prepared to award this spring the first federal grants for studies with lab-grown stem cells. A It is important to understand that the cells being used in this research were destined to be discarded in any case,@ the Nobel laureates wrote.

Indian State delaying Conversions

NEW DELHI, Feb. 26, 01 (CWN)--Fears by Christian groups in eastern Orissa state over the enactment of a controversial lawC that requires prior government permission before religious conversion--have been realized this week.

Police in Balasore district in the state are reported to have prevented the six-member tribal family of Channa Singh from embracing Christianity, invoking the provisions of the Orissa Freedom of Religion Act enacted in November 1999. Following the silence of government officials even three weeks after Singh= s family applied to the District Collector in the prescribed form for permission to convert, Singh and Protestant pastor Rameshar Mundu decided to go ahead with the conversion ceremony. However, police stopped them on the grounds that the investigation into their causes leading to their conversion was not yet complete.

Under the controversial act, those seeking to convert have to apply to the District Collector who would then ask the police to investigate the matter and report to him. If he is satisfied with the reasons for which the person intended to convert, permission would be granted for it. However reports say that government officials are holding back the permission for the tribal family to convert under pressure from Hindu fundamentalist outfits.

Churches had expressed the same concern last March 2000 when they jointly petitioned the state high court challenging the validity of the law, saying that it violates the fundamental right A to profess, practice, and propagate the religion of one= s choice@ under the Indian constitution and is likely to be misused against Christians.

While dozens of tribal Christian families were A reconverted@ under threat amid much fanfare by Hindu fundamentalists several months ago, Christian calls for invocation of the act went unheeded in the state ruled by a coalition government in which the pro-Hindu BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is a partner.

New Laws To Blame For Rise In Irish Abortions

DUBLIN, Mar. 1, 01 (CWN)-- Abortion statistics reported in Ireland demonstrate the failure of a 1995 law supposedly aimed at reducing abortions, according to pro-life groups.

The statistics showed that there were 4,921 Irish women reported traveling abroad to abort their babies by September 2000, compared to 3,444 for the same period in 1999. The Pro-Life Campaign blamed the results on liberal legislation enacted in 1995 known as the Abortion Information Act.

A The Act which made it legal to provide the names and addresses of abortion clinics and for clinics to advertise in Irish newspapers has singularly failed in the then government= s stated intention of reducing abortions,@ said a spokesman for the pro-life group. 1999 saw the largest number of Irish babiesC 6,226--aborted, but a new high will be set if the current trend continues.

Vietnam Lifts Ban on New Cardinal

VATICAN, Mar. 1, 01 (FIDES/CWN)--Cardinal Francois Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan will be allowed to return to his native Vietnam, after a decade in effective exile, the Fides news service has reported.

Having received his red hat from Pope John Paul II on February 21, the new cardinal A may return to the country of his birth where he will be afforded all the privileges normally given to overseas Vietnamese@ according to a statement released by the Vietnam foreign ministry. If he chooses to visit his home, Cardinal Van Thuan A will only face routine immigration procedures.@

The cardinal had been imprisoned for 13 years, forced by police to fly to Australia in 1991 and was told he would not be allowed to return.

As the coadjutor Bishop of Saigon, the future cardinal was seen as an enemy by the government as he had personal ties to the former president Ngo Dinh Diem.

The Vietnamese government has placed heavy restraints on the activities of the Catholic ChurchC insisting, for instance, on the right to approve bishops nominated by the Vatican. Sources in Vietnam, cited by the Fides news agency, indicate that the new attitude toward Cardinal Van Thuan might be part of a general relaxation in the government= s posture, indicating the prospect for an easing of restrictions on the Church in the Asian country.

Russians Concealing Strategic Military Build-Up

The once great Russian bear is hardly hibernating as it rebuilds its military.

Exclusive To The Spotlight

By MIKE BLAIR

The Russians have been carefully nurturing the misconception that their military forces and equipment are falling apart, but recent accounts tell a different tale.

The Kremlin has been attempting to convince America and the rest of the West that its active army numbers less than 400,000 men, but US intelligence agencies have found various indicators that do not support this figure.

According to a report published in Military magazine, American intelligence has determined that the Russian order of Battle shows its army has about 1,500 active duty generals. This means, if Russian claims of a 400,000-man army are true, its army has approximately 267 men serving under each of its generals.

Also, the Russian army maintains a roster of 27,000 active duty officers of the rank of colonel, which would mean that it would have one colonel for every eight soldiers.

The Establishment news media has portrayed the Russian Navy as consisting of aging, rusting hulks of decades-old ships.

Nothing, however, has been reported outside of military journals that the Russian Navy just launched a new and powerful submarine that they have named Gepard, which means Leopard in English.

The Russians have also come up with a new torpedo that can travel an incredible 230 miles per hour underwater.

American torpedoes travel at about 45 miles per hour.

The new torpedo is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead directly to America= s latest aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Ronald Reagan.

Russians have also developed a new anti-ship cruise missile called the Klub, which Kremlin military leaders boast is capable of penetrating the defensive screen of a U.S. carrier battle group.

Klub missiles are aboard the Gepard and other front-line Russian submarines, as well as submarines that the Russians are currently selling to the Chinese.

One Russian submarine, according to Military, recently launched a new ballistic missile close to the coast of Alaska, landing down-range in the southern Pacific, making the point that the Russian Navy is hardly asleep.

U.S. intelligence experts warn that Russia is building up its ground mobile nuclear forces which are difficult to detect and destroy because they are usually kept moving from one site to another on trucks or railroad cars.

Some Russian scientists warn that the Russians may be using U.S. aid to develop new chemical and biological weapons.

The Russian Air Force is also wide awake and alert, now being equipped with new aircraft and weapons, most of which are equal to what the West maintains.

Moscow has reportedly deployed several of its TU-95 strategic long-range bombers at bases in eastern Siberia, at Anadyr in the Bering Sea and Tiksi Air base on the Lapter Sea.

The TU-95 known by the NATO designation A Bear@ is one of the Russian Air Force= s primary launching platforms for multiple warhead nuclear cruise missiles. The deployment of the bombers, which can easily reach Alaskan shores comes in the wake of Russian SU-24 fighters A buzzing@ the U.S. carrier Kitty Hawk on two different occasions while it was refueling in the Sea of Japan.

Do the Russians still have hostile designs on the West?

In any case, it is becoming clear that the Russian bear is still capable of roaming far beyond the confines of its cave.

Why we publish Russian Military and Church Information

Our Lady at Necedah, Wisconsin from 1950-1975 warned that Russia would attack the West coast of the U.S. and Alaska. The previous article shows they are capable of doing that now. Our Lady at Bayside, New York from 1970 to 1994 warned that Russia would attack the U.S. East coast with submarine missiles stored in Cuba. Our Lady at Fatima, Portugal in 1917 warned that Russia would be God= s instrument to destroy many nations and cause error to spread throughout the world. At present Russia is arming Iran, an oil-rich nation with well-educated people. Iran is arming the Palestinian and Lebanese Hezbollah armies who constantly war against Israel.

Our Lady at Fatima said that if the Pope in union with all the Bishops of the world, would consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary that God would re-unite the Catholic and Russian Orthodox Churches. Thus, any news on that subject is very important also.

Bishop Pleads For Return To Basics Of Faith

LONDON, Mar. 1, 01 (CWN)--An increasing number of Catholics have fallen away from Sunday Mass and regular confession, says Shrewsbury= s Bishop Brian Noble.

In a pastoral letter read throughout the diocese, Bishop Noble calls for every parish to reflect on the Gospel message. A All too easily there can be a dulling of our sense of right and wrong,@ writes Bishop Noble. A And even more serious can be our missing out on the experience of actually receiving forgiveness and being reconciled. We need to think again. And we need to breathe new life into the sacrament.

Bishop Noble says there can be no substitute for attending Mass every Sunday. A It is here that we express our identity as the Church, the Body of Christ,@ he writes. A It is here that we can meet Christ in the Scriptures and in the breaking of bread; and here that our commitment can be renewed and strengthened.@

Archbishop Warns of Drastic Fall In Priestly Vocations

EDINBURGH, Mar. 1, 01 (CWN)-- The archdiocese of St. Andrew= s and Edinburgh could have as few as 50 priests within ten years. They have 99 priests serving an estimated 110,000 Catholics. Each priest must run three parishes and school systems. In a letter read at every Mass, Archbishop Keith O= Brien appealed for prayers for vocations.

Friday abstinence

Question: Why do we give up meat on Fridays in Lent? What is the origin of giving up meat?

Answer: Friday abstinence from meat was a practice way back in the Apostolic Church. The Didache, Tertullian and Clement of Alexandria all wrote about it. Not eating meat on Friday was done in commemoration of Christ= s giving up his body and blood on the cross on Good Friday. Since Pope Paul= s VI= s decree in 1966, we are enjoined to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. This is the only decree American Bishops obey. The universal Catholic Church law is that no meat is to be eaten on all Fridays of the year. American bishops refuse to obey and tell Catholics in the U.S. of that law.

Plenary Indulgence

Question: Please explain a A plenary indulgence,@ what we must do to gain it and what are the benefits?

Answer: A A plenary indulgence@ is the full remission of the temporal punishment due to already forgiven sins. To gain a plenary indulgence you must be in the state of grace, free from mortal sin, have the intention to gain the indulgence and then say the prayers and/do the actions required. This indulgence can be kept or given to the souls in purgatory. The benefit as defined is the full remission of the temporal punishment due to forgiven sins. (Catechism: 1471-1479).

On Ushers

Question: Why does an usher feel it is acceptable to seat people during the Mass instead of waiting for the breaks? Everyone watches the usher instead of listening to the readings.

Answer: Ushers are instructed NOT to seat people once the Liturgy of the Word has begun. Seating during the readings and the homily are big distractions to all. During the praying of the Creed and taking up the collection there is A break time@ for ushering people to their seats. How about becoming an usher?

Abortion making inroads in Latin America

MIAMI--Pro-life activists of Latin America believe radical feminism that exports an abortion mentality that runs counter to the indigenous culture= s traditional respect for life is making inroads in Latin America. Osiris Reyes, a Mexican pro-life activist, said U.S. groups, including Catholics for a Free Choice, finance most of the abortion organizations in Mexico.

Abortion is legal in most Mexican states, though restrictions vary from place to place. The abortion lobby is pushing homogenize abortion laws throughout the nation and reduce the restrictions, Reyes said.

Nine babies were aborted in Spain in 1985 when abortion was legalized but 53,847 were aborted in 2000.

Abortion is illegal in Colombia and Nicaragua. Most of the pro-life organizations have a budget of less than $5,000 while the abortion groups have as much as $60 million from U.S. groups such as Planned Parenthood.

All Muslim States Withdraw Ambassadors from Israel

TEL AVIV---In the last several weeks all the Muslim states of the world have recalled their ambassador to Israel in anger that Israel is murdering Palestinian youth by the hundreds. In the past, the act of recalling an ambassador is tantamount to a declaration of war. The continuing violence and calls for war from many young Muslims are pushing older Muslim leaders into a war they would prefer to avoid.

Withdrawing from the Mormon Church

One can not just stop going to a Mormon Church to withdraw from the Church. You must continue to pay your tithe (10%) to the Church until you file and get approved as a fallen member of the Church. We do have all the information on our website (http://catholicbook.com) that has links to the Mormons LDS Church Handbook which explains the procedures. If you have friends that wish to do that, refer them to the site or notify us and we will get them help. Once a Mormon stops attending Church they are besieged by calls, visits, e-mails demanding they return to the Mormon fold so it can be very traumatic.

ROME OUTLAWS EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS

Entitled A On Certain Questions Regarding the Collaboration of the Non-Ordained Faithful in the Sacred Ministry of Priests@ -Libreria Editrice Vaticana-Vatican City 1997.

If a priest is present the extraordinary ministers are not allowed to give out communion unless the Mass would be excessively prolonged because of an insufficient number of priests or deacons available to distribute Holy Communion.

Article 8.

The Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion

The non-ordained faithful already collaborate with the sacred ministers in diverse pastoral situations since A This wonderful gift of the Eucharist, which is the greatest gift of all, demands that such an important mystery should be increasingly better known and its saving power more fully shared.@

Such liturgical service is a response to the objective needs of the faithful especially those of the sick and to those liturgical assemblies in which there are particularly large numbers of the faithful who wish to receive Holy Communion.

1. The canonical discipline concerning extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion must be correctly applied so as to avoid generating confusion. The same discipline establishes that the ordinary minister of Holy Communion is the Bishop, the Priest and the Deacon. Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are those instituted as acolytes and the faithful so deputed in accordance with Canon 230, Sect. 3.

A non-ordained member of the faithful, in cases of true necessity, may be deputed by the diocesan bishop, using the appropriate form of blessing for these situations to act as an extraordinary minister to distribute Holy Communion outside of liturgical celebrations ad actum vel ad tempus or for a more stable period. In exceptional cases or in unforseen circumstances, the priest presiding at the liturgy may authorize such ad actum.

2. Extraordinary ministers may distribute Holy Communion at eucharistic celebrations only when there are no ordained ministers present or when those ordained ministers present are truly unable to distribute Holy Communion. They may also exercise this function at eucharistic celebrations where there are particularly large numbers of the faithful and which would be excessively prolonged because of an insufficient number of ordained minister to distribute Holy Communion.

This function is supplementary and extraordinary and must be exercised in accordance with the norm of law. It is thus useful for the diocesan bishop to issue particular norms concerning extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion which, in complete harmony with the universal law of the Church, should regulate the exercise of this function in his diocese. Such norms should provide, amongst other things, for matters such as the instruction in eucharistic doctrine of those chosen to be extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, the meaning of the service they provide, the rubrics to be observed, the reverence to be shown for such an August Sacrament and instruction concerning the discipline on admission to Holy Communion.

To avoid creating confusion, certain practices are to be avoided and eliminated where such have emerged in particular Churches:

------extraordinary ministers receiving Holy Communion apart from the other faithful as though concelebrants;

------association with the renewal of promises made by priests at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday, as well as other categories of faithful who renew religious vows or receive a mandate as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion;

----the habitual use of extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion at Mass thus arbitrarily extending the concept of A a great number of the faithful@ .

Current Situation

We had a lot of problems making this issue which is why the print is smaller than usual. Hopefully, you can read it. there is a reader who can= t read it, let us know and we will make you a special copy in a larger print size which will make more pages.

World situation is deteriorating. Africa still has many wars. Macedonia and Albania are at war. Kosovo is dangerous. peacekeepers and Serbs. Chechyna is dangerous for Russians who die there daily in savage attacks. Russia is arming Iran and China. Israel and Palestine are in a guerilla war. Russia is revealing more of its true communist self.

Stock market continues to fall as planned by money powers so that their planned solution to the crisis will be accepted by all. Abortion still is legal. The mass media continues to teach children on how to kill. Many murderers say that the television told them to kill their relative. CNN today showed how to use cocaine and crack. It was very dumb on their part. Their owner, Ted Turner, said Catholics are Jesus freaks. Catholics still are too passive and let people insult them and do not even reply.

Shortages of water and electricity are getting worse plus OPEC is reducing oil output 4% which will raise the price. The Pope is still hanging on even though weakened, a sign of the current state of the health of the Church. The Sacrament of Confession is still ignored by most Catholics. Many no longer go to Mass on Sunday. They go Saturday afternoon which is the day Jews go to Temple and Seventh Day Adventists go to church. US Catholic bishops pick and choose which Roman edicts they will obey.
